Objectives and Achievements

During the past 9 years, Wirral Heart Beat - with the great assistance and co-operation of Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service - has opened "outreach" gyms in Birkenhead, Upton, Heswall, Bromborough, Ellesmere Port, Wallasey and West Kirby Community Fire Stations.

These "outreach" gyms (which are open daily) enable patients who have completed

their Cardiac Rehabilitation Programme at the Wirral Heart Support Centre to continue

exercising in a safe and secure environment. The "outreach" gyms are equipped with

specialist exercise equipment supplied by Technogym UK Limited, Nautilus Health &

Fitness and Physique Leisure. Each gym is provided with a defibrillator (supplied

by the charity) and the activities of patients attending the gyms are carefully supervised

by the charity's volunteers, all of whom have received CPR training.

The charity has spent over £120 000 in providing exercise equipment and generally

improving facilities for the mutual benefit of the Centre's ex patients and Wirral

based Fire-fighters.

We believe the partnership between the charity and Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is unique and could act as a pattern for similar ventures in other areas of the United Kingdom.
